AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine Introduces Baby Care Center to Support Nursing Mothers in Workforce
AngloGold Ashanti, Obuasi Mine, has embarked on an initiative to support nursing mothers among its employees by constructing a dedicated baby care center within the community.
This project aims to offer relief to breastfeeding mothers, enabling them to focus on their work while ensuring optimal care for their newborns.
The facility, which is fully insured, is equipped with state-of-the-art features including CCTV cameras for round-the-clock security, a welcoming reception area, a designated washing area, three care rooms accommodating up to six babies each, a washroom, a waiting area, and a dining space.
Designed to cater to infants aged between four to twelve months, the baby care center provides a secure and nurturing environment, allowing mothers to carry out their duties with peace of mind, knowing their babies are well taken care of.
During the commissioning of the facility in Obuasi, held to commemorate International Women’s Day, Meshack Baah, Senior Manager of Human Resources at AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, emphasized the significance of the baby care center in supporting female employees transitioning into motherhood.
“We are proud to take this crucial step in supporting our female employees as they become nursing mothers,” Mr. Baah stated. He further elaborated that AngloGold Ashanti Schools would partner in managing the facility, ensuring that experienced and professional staff are employed to provide the highest level of attention and care to each baby.
According to the Senior Manager of Human Resources, the project is expected to curb the challenges of finding trustworthy nannies.
He added that the centre will allow employee nursing mothers and fathers to focus on their duties at the workplace, knowing that their babies are well taken care of.
In addition to the establishment of the baby care center, Mr. Baah highlighted that AngloGold Ashanti has implemented several initiatives aimed at fostering a welcoming and supportive working environment for female employees who are nursing mothers.
Among these initiatives are specially designed work uniforms and overalls tailored for female employees, prioritizing their comfort while on the job. Additionally, the company provides specialized uniforms for pregnant staff, ensuring their safety and comfort throughout their pregnancy.
Moreover, AngloGold Ashanti offers free menstrual disposable sanitary pads for emergency use, recognizing the importance of providing essential resources to support female employees’ well-being and hygiene needs. These initiatives reflect the company’s commitment to promoting gender equality and supporting the diverse needs of its workforce.
“We have also enhanced maternity leave benefits,” he emphasized, “which now include 16 weeks of post-birth confinement, an increase from the previous 12 weeks. Nursing mothers with twins or more are entitled to 20 weeks of confinement. Additionally, an extra four weeks of unpaid leave may be taken before or after confinement.”
Simon Peter Atta Cato, the Executive Director of AngloGold Ashanti Schools, commended the management of AngloGold Ashanti for establishing a nurturing care center for nursing mothers within their workforce.
In his role as the manager of the baby care center, Mr. Cato assured that AngloGold Ashanti Schools would continue to uphold the core values of the company.
He also highlighted the significance of employment in balancing the needs of work and infant care, acknowledging that while earning income can benefit families in terms of health, nutrition, and financial stability, it can also pose challenges for women in terms of allocating time for infant care and breastfeeding.
